The Southern Oaks Story
Our story starts with our people – which is how we justify our claim to be one of the best courses in the Upstate. A golf course is people and we have the best.
Wayne Myers, the PGA Professional of Southern Oaks has enjoyed playing the game of golf practically his entire life. As a child, his typical summer day was to be on the golf course from 8:00am to 7:00pm and consume 45 holes of golf and 200 range balls. This practice paid off when he was offered a golf scholarships to Gardner Webb College. His team won the NAIA National Championships in 1976 and 1977 and he was selected to the 1st Team All American in 1978.
After College, Wayne realized that playing the tour demanded a stronger ability than he possessed – but he did not question being on the golf course in some capacity! He began as the Assistant Pro in 1978 for Green Valley Country Club in Greenville, SC where for nine and a half years he learned the business of golf and fine-tuned his game to compete with fellow professionals.
In 1987, Wayne took another giant step into the Head Professional position at Pickens County Country club in Pickens, SC, where for three years he earned many playing honors – including qualifying for the 1988 GGO! He also qualified for the National Club Pro Championships in 1988 and 1989 and in the South Carolina Open in 1989. He also achieved 3rd place in the Carolinas PGA Section Championship in 1989 and won the 1991 SCPGA Championship.
Wayne has been playing golf for a long time and he continues to play and practice on a regular basis. He set a world record on June 9, 1994 at Southern Oaks by scoring 57 on the course.
